Ventoux, Rhone Valley, France
Philippe Gimel, owner of Saint Jean du Barroux, has learned from some of the best producers in the Rhone valley, including Chateau Beaucastel and Domaine Janasse. He founded his winery in 2003 applying what he learned to an estate in the Ventoux. Generally, he intends for low yields to be the foundation of his wines. While producing his higher end wines, he found that there were scattered pockets of vines that just resisted low yields. Rather than force low yields on these naturally vigorous vines, he decided to embrace that they wanted to do and started making 'La Source.' The name La Source, comes from the natural artesian spring located near the vineyards of Saint Jean du Barroux. Perhaps it is this underground supply of water that causes the random spurts of growth!
La Source is a Grenache based blend that is all about the purity and beauty of the fruit with notes of bright cherry, raspberry, and red fruits. The fruit is accented by herbs and anise. Think of it as a Rhone Goldilocks red. It just perfectly built right down the middle with balance and tone. It just feels right!
