Benriach 'curiositas' 10 Year 46% Speyside

Region: Speyside

Notes & Flavors

The Benriach Curiositas uses a heavily peated malted barley as the cereal varietal to produce a unique, fresh, peated expression. This rare peated single malt, from the Heartland of Speyside, has wonderful overtones of peat reek, combined cleverly with a background of fruity, floral, heathery notes and an appealing presence of oak wood in the finish. Traditionalists believe that peated malts achieve optimum balance of peat-bittersweet and oak infusion after 10 years of maturation. In fact, peated Benriach is a return to the original Speyside character and flavor of malts typical of the nineteenth century. Curiositas is a distinctive and welcome addition to the Speyside scene - this is a dram to be savored with a dash of water. Rich amber color. An explosion of aromatic peat reek, with fragrant hints of honey, fruit and mellow oak. An avalanche of peat, followed by an extravagant and complex mix of fruit, heather, nuts, oak wood and spices.

Benriach 10 Year 43%

Region: Speyside

Notes & Flavors

This BenRiach 10 Year Old marks a significant milestone – it is the first expression from the Benriach core range to be created predominantly from whiskies distilled at BenRiach since Billy Walker took over in 2004.

Natural tawny amber in colour from a mix of American and European oak casks, it has a fruity top-note (fresh apple, with a hint of powdered ginger) with a vanilla sponge base; these aromas are well translated by the taste, which is sweet overall, with light acidity, referencing peaches and lemon zest; a creamy texture and a long, warming finish.

BenRiach fans will not be disappointed with soft and rich notes coming to the fore. Typical sherry notes all also in the mix which all BenRiach fans will be truly excited about.

A-, drinkhacker.com

"A very pale straw color is the first inkling of how gentle this whisky will be. The nose is classically Ardbegian — light on its feet but oily, with significant floral overtones atop gentle petrol notes. The palate is equally quiet, despite bottling at 55% abv it shows more delicate floral notes, light vanilla, and a spritz of citrus. At the same time, there’s a backbone here — peat smoke, but with a character that comes across like it’s been well-filtered and refined, like a cigar detected from across the room, one which makes one wonder, maybe I should find one of those cigars for myself…"

Aberlour 'a'bunadh' Alba 58.7% Batch 002

Region: Highland

Notes & Flavors

Color:: Medium-pale wheat.

On the nose:: Delightfully odd, in the sense of diverging from my expectations. “Peaches and cream” would be a reductive descriptor, but there’s so much more to this. Imagine a whole jungle full of exotic fruits (mango, papaya, lychee, guava) married with an entire dairy worth of milk derivatives (buttermilk, Greek yogurt, crème fraiche). This vacillates along a sinusoid between these two poles, bouncing from rich fruitiness to smooth creaminess and back again. As I sniff longer, there’s also a cereal note and a slightly soapy nuance.

In the mouth:: Zippy to start; this does not make much of an impression at the front of the mouth. The midpalate once again echoes the bipolar nature of the nose, with an interplay of milky and plump, tropically fruity flavors. I also get the sweet cinnamon flavor of apple pie filling. This transitions to the finish with both the flavor and texture of soap. At the back of the tongue, I get a slightly stale flavor of old cut tobacco and dried autumn leaves.
